409 vs 430

These two grades are listed as equivalents of each other: their chemistry windows overlap and they serve the same applications. They are not always identical — check the differences below before substituting, especially in certified designs.

409

Stainless Steel

409 is a titanium-stabilised 11% chromium ferritic stainless developed for automotive exhaust systems. It offers enough oxidation and corrosion resistance for exhaust service at the lowest cost of any stainless family member.

Standards: DIN 1.4512 · AISI 409 · JIS SUS409L (close) · GB 06Cr11Ti

430

Stainless Steel

430 is the most widely used ferritic stainless steel, a 17% chromium, nickel-free grade with good corrosion resistance in mild atmospheres and excellent resistance to nitric acid. It is the standard grade for appliance trim and decorative sheet.

Standards: DIN 1.4016 · AISI 430 · JIS SUS430 · GB 10Cr17
