A217 WC9 vs A387 Gr.22

These two grades are listed as equivalents of each other: their chemistry windows overlap and they serve the same applications. They are not always identical — check the differences below before substituting, especially in certified designs.

A217 WC9

Structural & HSLA Steel

ASTM A217 WC9 is the 2.25Cr-1Mo cast steel — cast counterpart of A387 Gr.22 plate and F22 forgings — for the hottest, most hydrogen-rich valve and casing duty in refineries and power plants, to roughly 593 °C.

A387 Gr.22

Structural & HSLA Steel

ASTM A387 Grade 22 is the 2.25Cr-1Mo plate behind hydrocracking and hydrotreating reactors — the workhorse alloy for hot, high-pressure hydrogen service. Its creep strength and hydrogen resistance hold to roughly 600 °C.

Standards: DIN 10CrMo9-10 (near) · AISI A387 Gr.22 Cl.2 · JIS SCMV4 (near) · GB 12Cr2Mo1R (near)
