1144 vs 1141
These two grades are listed as equivalents of each other: their chemistry windows overlap and they serve the same applications. They are not always identical — check the differences below before substituting, especially in certified designs.
1144
Carbon Steel
1144 is a heavily resulfurized, high manganese carbon steel that reaches high strength in the as-drawn condition while machining freely. In North America it is sold under trade names for stress-proof-type shafting applications (trademark names belong to their owners).
Standards: AISI 1144
1141
Carbon Steel
1141 pairs 1040-class carbon with 1.35–1.65% manganese and resulfurization, giving free-machining bar with better hardenability than 1140. It is a popular cold drawn grade for machined shafts and studs.
Standards: AISI 1141
