EH40 vs EH36

These two grades are listed as equivalents of each other: their chemistry windows overlap and they serve the same applications. They are not always identical — check the differences below before substituting, especially in certified designs.

EH40

Structural & HSLA Steel

EH40 is the arctic member of the 390 MPa hull-steel family: same chemistry window as AH40/DH40, but impact-certified at −40 °C. Ice-classed vessels, Arctic offshore units and cold-climate port structures are its home ground.

EH36

Structural & HSLA Steel

EH36 is the premium 355 MPa hull grade with impact toughness guaranteed at −40 °C — standard for LNG/LPG carriers, ice-going ships and Arctic offshore structures. It is the toughest of the widely traded 36-series ship plate.
