Y40Mn

Data verified

Y40Mn is the top-strength grade of China’s GB/T 8731 free-cutting family: 0.40% carbon with 1.20–1.55% manganese (the concept of AISI 1141/1144) plus 0.15–0.25% sulfur for chip control. It is used where turned parts must carry real loads after heat treatment.

Heat treatment

Quench and temper or induction harden for service strength — the only Y grade routinely heat treated; machine in the annealed or as-rolled state first.

Applications & Processing

Applications: Higher-strength turned shafts, studs, tie rods and fittings; an economical alternative to quenched-and-tempered alloy bar for medium-duty parts.

Processing: Machines well for its strength; heat treat after machining; weldability poor. Stressproof-type (drawn at high reduction) equivalents exist in the US system as 1144.

FAQ

Y40Mn vs 45 steel (1045) for a turned shaft?
Y40Mn machines noticeably faster and its manganese gives better hardenability; 1045 wins on weldability, toughness consistency and fatigue-critical duty, where sulfur is unwelcome.
