2205 Duplex

Data verified

2205 is the most widely used duplex stainless steel, with a roughly 50/50 ferrite-austenite structure giving twice the yield strength of 316L plus excellent pitting and stress-corrosion resistance from 22% chromium, 3% molybdenum and nitrogen.

Applications & Processing

Applications: Oil and gas piping, chemical tankers, desalination, heat exchangers, offshore platforms, FGD equipment.

Processing: Weld with 2209-type filler and controlled heat input (0.5–2.5 kJ/mm) to preserve phase balance; machining is demanding due to high strength and work hardening.

FAQ

2205 vs 316L — when is duplex worth it?
Where chlorides, stress and strength combine: 2205 resists chloride stress-corrosion cracking that cracks 316L, and its doubled yield strength often allows thinner, lighter pressure parts.
Can 2205 be used at high temperature?
No — the ferrite phase embrittles between roughly 300 and 950 °C, so duplex grades are limited to about 300 °C maximum in pressure service.
