D3
Data verifiedD3 is an ultra-high-carbon chromium steel with even more carbide than D2 and no Mo/V additions. It maximizes abrasive wear life at the lowest cost, but with the lowest toughness of the D-family.

Applications & Processing
Applications: Dies for abrasive materials (silicon steel, filled plastics), brick molds, powder compaction, deep drawing dies.
Processing: Difficult to machine and grind; brittle — avoid sharp internal corners and shock loading.
FAQ
- D3 or D2 for a blanking die?
- D2 for general blanking (better toughness, easier processing). D3 only when abrasive wear, not chipping, is the failure mode.
