405

Data verified

405 is an aluminium-bearing ferritic stainless designed to remain non-hardening when cooled from welding temperatures, unlike plain 410. It gives 12% chromium corrosion resistance in a weldable, low-cost sheet and plate grade.

Applications & Processing

Applications: Pressure vessels, heat-exchanger parts, steam turbine blades (annealed), quenched-and-tempered look-alike parts not requiring hardening.

Processing: Weldable without the hardening cracks of 410; ductility is lower than austenitics; avoid service above about 475 °C for long periods (475 °C embrittlement).
