201

Data verified

201 is a chromium-manganese austenitic stainless steel in which manganese and nitrogen replace part of the nickel of 304. It work-hardens rapidly and offers higher strength than 304, but lower corrosion resistance and formability.

Applications & Processing

Applications: Cookware, kitchen sinks, hose clamps, trailer and railcar trim, formed structural parts.

Processing: Formable but needs more power than 304 due to fast work hardening; weldable by standard methods; machinability similar to 304.

FAQ

Can 201 replace 304?
Only in mild indoor service. 201 has less nickel and lower pitting resistance, so it rusts sooner outdoors or near chlorides; 304 remains the safe general-purpose choice.
