1144
Data verified1144 is a heavily resulfurized, high manganese carbon steel that reaches high strength in the as-drawn condition while machining freely. In North America it is sold under trade names for stress-proof-type shafting applications (trademark names belong to their owners).
Chemical composition
| Element | Content (%) |
|---|---|
| C | 0.40–0.48 |

Applications & Processing
Applications: Shafts, spindles, studs, hydraulic ram parts, high-volume turned components.
Processing: Top-tier machinability; high sulfur makes it unsuitable for welding and severe transverse loading.
