1084 vs 1095

These two grades are listed as equivalents of each other: their chemistry windows overlap and they serve the same applications. They are not always identical — check the differences below before substituting, especially in certified designs.

1084

Carbon Steel

1084 is a eutectoid-plus high carbon steel popular for blades and springs because its simple chemistry heat treats forgivingly in small workshops. The manganese level gives slightly deeper hardening than 1095.

Standards: DIN C85 type (near) · AISI 1084 · JIS SK5 family (near) · GB 85 (near)

1095

Carbon Steel

1095 is the highest-carbon steel of the standard SAE bar series: very hard and wear resistant after quenching, but brittle and shallow-hardening because of its low manganese. It is a traditional blade and spring steel for thin sections.

Standards: DIN C95 type (near) · AISI 1095 · JIS SK85 family (near) · GB T9 family (near)
