AH40 vs EH40

These two grades are listed as equivalents of each other: their chemistry windows overlap and they serve the same applications. They are not always identical — check the differences below before substituting, especially in certified designs.

AH40

Structural & HSLA Steel

AH40 is the 390 MPa higher-tensile hull steel of the classification-society system (ASTM A131 / GB/T 712 family). It steps above AH36 where scantlings get thin — large container ships and VLCCs use AH40/DH40/EH40 to cut hull weight while keeping 0 °C-class toughness for the A grade.

EH40

Structural & HSLA Steel

EH40 is the arctic member of the 390 MPa hull-steel family: same chemistry window as AH40/DH40, but impact-certified at −40 °C. Ice-classed vessels, Arctic offshore units and cold-climate port structures are its home ground.
