1080 vs 1084

These two grades are listed as equivalents of each other: their chemistry windows overlap and they serve the same applications. They are not always identical — check the differences below before substituting, especially in certified designs.

1080

Carbon Steel

1080 sits at the eutectoid carbon level: fully pearlitic when normalized and capable of high hardness after quenching. It is a classic spring and blade steel for thicker sections than 1075 handles.

Standards: DIN C80 type (near) · AISI 1080 · JIS SK5 family (near) · GB 80

1084

Carbon Steel

1084 is a eutectoid-plus high carbon steel popular for blades and springs because its simple chemistry heat treats forgivingly in small workshops. The manganese level gives slightly deeper hardening than 1095.

Standards: DIN C85 type (near) · AISI 1084 · JIS SK5 family (near) · GB 85 (near)
