410 vs 403

These two grades are listed as equivalents of each other: their chemistry windows overlap and they serve the same applications. They are not always identical — check the differences below before substituting, especially in certified designs.

410

Stainless Steel

410 is the basic martensitic stainless steel, the lowest-cost grade that can be hardened by heat treatment. It trades corrosion resistance (12% chromium only) for strength, hardness and wear resistance.

Standards: DIN 1.4006 · AISI 410 · JIS SUS410 · GB 12Cr13

403

Stainless Steel

403 is a 12% chromium martensitic stainless developed for steam turbine blades, where controlled cleanliness and temper response matter more than maximum hardness. It is the quality-controlled sibling of 410.

Standards: DIN 1.4000 · AISI 403 · JIS SUS403 · GB 12Cr13
