405 vs 410

These two grades are listed as equivalents of each other: their chemistry windows overlap and they serve the same applications. They are not always identical — check the differences below before substituting, especially in certified designs.

405

Stainless Steel

405 is an aluminium-bearing ferritic stainless designed to remain non-hardening when cooled from welding temperatures, unlike plain 410. It gives 12% chromium corrosion resistance in a weldable, low-cost sheet and plate grade.

Standards: DIN 1.4002 · AISI 405 · JIS SUS405 · GB 06Cr13Al

410

Stainless Steel

410 is the basic martensitic stainless steel, the lowest-cost grade that can be hardened by heat treatment. It trades corrosion resistance (12% chromium only) for strength, hardness and wear resistance.

Standards: DIN 1.4006 · AISI 410 · JIS SUS410 · GB 12Cr13
