R260 vs U71Mn

These two grades are listed as equivalents of each other: their chemistry windows overlap and they serve the same applications. They are not always identical — check the differences below before substituting, especially in certified designs.

R260

Structural & HSLA Steel

R260 is the world’s standard rail steel grade to EN 13674-1, a pearlitic carbon-manganese steel whose as-rolled head hardness of 260–300 HBW balances wear against weldability and cost. Most conventional and mixed-traffic lines outside China are laid in R260.

U71Mn

Structural & HSLA Steel

U71Mn is China’s standard carbon rail steel to GB/T 2585, the pearlitic C-Mn grade laid on most conventional-speed lines. Wear resistance comes from its high carbon and manganese; weldability is limited and rail joints are aluminothermic or flash-butt welded.
