1.2316 vs 1.2083

These two grades are listed as equivalents of each other: their chemistry windows overlap and they serve the same applications. They are not always identical — check the differences below before substituting, especially in certified designs.

1.2316

Mold Steel

1.2316 is a prehardened stainless mold steel with about 17% chromium and molybdenum for improved corrosion resistance over 1.2083. It is specified for molds processing PVC and other corrosive plastics in humid environments.

Standards: DIN 1.2316 · AISI 420 mod. (X36CrMo17) · GB 3Cr17Mo (near)

1.2083

Mold Steel

1.2083 is a martensitic stainless mold steel (420 type) combining corrosion resistance with high polishability. It is the default choice for molds running corrosive plastics such as PVC, and for medical and food-contact tooling.

Standards: DIN 1.2083 · AISI 420 · JIS SUS420J2 · GB 4Cr13
