1117 vs 1215

These two grades are listed as equivalents of each other: their chemistry windows overlap and they serve the same applications. They are not always identical — check the differences below before substituting, especially in certified designs.

1117

Carbon Steel

1117 is a resulfurized free-machining steel: added sulfur and high manganese give fast, clean cutting while keeping enough carbon to carburize. It is a standard screw-machine grade for small turned parts in volume.

Standards: AISI 1117 · JIS SUM family (near) · GB Y15 (near)

1215

Carbon Steel

1215 is a rephosphorized and resulfurized free-cutting steel with very low carbon, built purely for machining speed. It is one of the fastest-cutting bar steels available and a staple of high-volume screw machining.

Standards: AISI 1215 · JIS SUM25 (near) · GB Y12 (near)
